“The mellifluous rustling of exuberant foliage and of the marvelous toilets of Fashion’s fairest daughters, combined with the delicious cadences of Dodworth’s very best orchestra, lent no small attraction to Central Park yesterday afternoon. There was a rush of visitors to the Mall, the lake, the drive, the walks, the ramble, the cave, the shady bowers, the new reservoir, the spacious lawns, the rustic bridges, the lofty tower, the subterranean streets, the delightful Summer-houses, and all the varied resorts which make our Metropolitan lungs at once healthy and worthy of admiration. It is pleasant to see so many nice folks enjoying the Saturday afternoon music.  But nice folks can enjoy music elsewhere, and one can’t help wishing that poor folks could have a chance to see the Park on these, its palmiest days.  Such an assemblage of pleasure-seekers does not look much like war.”
