“The Amateur Philharmonic Society of New-York announces a fifth season of musical labor, and purposes giving three public concerts at Irving Hall, the first of which is to be on Dec. 6. The Society numbers about 40 active members, all amateurs, under the direction of Leopold Meyer. Tickets are sold only by subscription, and may be obtained of Mr. L. H. Fowler, the President, at No. 353 Fifth ave.”
“Amateur musical efforts, when well directed, are worthy of every encouragement, for through them pleasure and relaxation of a noble and elevating kind are found. Fortunately, we have in this city several amateur societies devoted to the practice of music of a high class, and in these we find the surest indications of a right and healthy progress in public taste. Such an association is the Amateur Philharmonic society, a body of instrumentalists that has been in existence for five seasons, but has given only one series of public concerts. At that one they played works of the highest class, such as the symphonies of Beethoven, Haydn, and Schubert, and lighter but still good music. They propose a series of three subscription concerts this winter, with weekly rehearsals, to which, for a very moderate subscription price, the non-performing members are invited. Mr. Lindley H. Fowler is the President of the society; Mr. Ronald Thomas, Treasurer, and Mr. Leopold Meyer the conductor.”
