“On Friday evening we dropped in at Tony Pastor’s to observe the success of ‘The Ladies’ Invitation Night.’ Mr. Pastor, in a spirit of generous liberality, has set apart the Friday evening of each week for a special purpose. On those occasions each one of his male patrons has the privilege of bringing with him one lady, for whose admission no charge is made—in short, the two persons are admitted for the price usually charged for one ticket, and it is presumed that the ladies extend an invitation to their escort to take them there. We found the auditorium crowded in every part…The Weston Sisters, attired in elegant lavender suits and blonde wigs, gave satisfaction in their double songs-and-dances. Larry Tooley in Dutch character songs; the Fieldings in Irish duets and sketches; Manchester and Jennings in their specialties; Jennie Engle’s serio-comic songs, introducing a new one entitled ‘Marching with the Band;’ Tony Pastor’s comic songs, introducing his ‘Character Album,’ with excellent caricature portraits; Ella Wesner in her effective character songs, with rapid changes of costume…”
