“Mr. Theodore Thomas has been giving the ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ music this week, and giving it with exquisite perfection. We hardly know which of the five numbers presented we should single out for special commendation. There was the beautiful Overture, so full of grace and life and delicacy that it seemed the very pattern of good playing; but the Scherzo that followed it was quite as wonderful; the Intermezzo was delicious; the dreamy Nocturne was remarkable for its sentiment, and the smooth and faultless tone of the horns; and last came the Wedding March, with a splendor and brilliancy we have never heard surpassed. The selections from the third act of the Meistersinger von Nürnberg have also been given this week with superb effect.”
