“On Thursday there was a grand programme. It opened with Beethoven’s ‘King Stephen’ overture, and included a Passacaglia of Bach’s, arranged for the orchestra by Heinrich Esser of Vienna; the Berlioz arrangement of Weber’s ‘Invitation to the Dance,’ and Liszt’s Second ‘Hungarian Rhapsody.’ The principal number, however, was Schumann’s Second Symphony. This beautiful but difficult composition, with its eccentric rhythm and strange variations of tempo, was exquisitely rendered—far better than we ever heard it before.”
