“Mr. Reinhold L. Herman gave a concert at Irving Hall last evening. Mr. Herman bears a good name as a pianist, and his performances yesterday showed him to be possessed of abundant sensibility and technical skill. He has not, however, that perfect touch producing the tone with which, under the fingers of the great masters of the instrument, it responds almost as satisfactorily as the violin. Mr. Herman had the co-operation of Mrs. Gulager—who, by the way, has to sing at the approaching Philharmonic concert; that of Miss Henne, and that of Herr Herman [sic] Brandt, a young violinist from the Leipsic [sic] Gewandhaus, whose style is rather deficient in breadth and eloquence, but whose tone is of unusual volume. Herr Brandt was hardly equal to the third movement of Mendelssohn’s trying concert, but he delivered the second part capitally, and all his solid work, so to speak, was deservedly applauded.”
