“De Garmo’s Hall was last night the scene of a very pleasant entertainment—another of those charming concerts in which a few of our best resident singers have given so much pleasure to their friends and to the musical public this season. The programme on this occasion was almost entirely new, while for encores old favorites were substituted. The soloists were Miss Beebe, who sang Mendelssohn’s Spring Song; Miss Finch, who gave a most intelligent and refined interpretation of Balfe’s setting of Longfellow’s lines ‘The Day is done’; and Mr. Aiken, who sang ‘The Monk,’ by Meyerbeer.
The part singing was among the best which this admirable group of vocalists have ever given us. Stevens’s ‘Ye Spotted Snakes’ was perfect in all respects. Horsley’s brilliant composition ‘See! the chariot at hand,’ received admirable treatment. Hindle’s ‘Queen of the Silver Bow,’ and Pearsall’s ‘Who will o’er the Downs?’ also deserve mention. For an encore, Sullivan’s ‘Hush thee, my baby,’ was sung, and was received with all the favor usually commanded by this popular little part-song.”
