“Among the Germans the day [Christmas] was generally celebrated as a holiday. The head-quarters of the numerous societies and clubs were extensively decorated with Christmas trees and pine foliage. The Arion Vocal Society gave an entertainment of vocal and musical exercises at St. Mark’s place, for which a rich programme had been prepared. The affair attracted a large attendance of the friends of the popular organization, and was fully enjoyed by all participating.”
