“Among the Germans the day [Christmas] was generally celebrated as a holiday. The head-quarters of the numerous societies and clubs were extensively decorated with Christmas trees and pine foliage… The Schillerbund, a popular German vocal organization, gave a Christmas soirée at the Turn Hall, in Fourth street, last night, including a dramatic entertainment. The affair was wound up by a soirée dansante.”
