“Among the Germans the day [Christmas] was generally celebrated as a holiday. The head-quarters of the numerous societies and clubs were extensively decorated with Christmas trees and pine foliage… The German Quartet Club gave a soirée dansante at its rooms, No. 10 Stanton street. There was also a distribution of Christmas prizes.”
