“Among the Germans the day [Christmas] was generally celebrated as a holiday. The head-quarters of the numerous societies and clubs were extensively decorated with Christmas trees and pine foliage… The Suavian Saengerbund gave a Christmas soirée at the Walhalla Hall, in Orchard street, a feature of which was a splendidly illuminated Christmas tree, decorated with Christmas gifts, which were distributed among the guests.”
