“Among the Germans the day [Christmas] was generally celebrated as a holiday. The head-quarters of the numerous societies and clubs were extensively decorated with Christmas trees and pine foliage… The Allemania Maennerchor gave a soirée at its rooms, No. 9 Second avenue, which also included a distribution of Christmas prizes, and which was wound up by a ball.”
