“Among the Germans the day [Christmas] was generally celebrated as a holiday. The head-quarters of the numerous societies and clubs were extensively decorated with Christmas trees and pine foliage… The German Women’s Benevolent Society No. 1 gave a ball at the Harmonic Rooms, the surplus proceeds of which will go to a charitable fund established by the society.”
