“Under the auspices of St. Mark’s Literary Union one of the most enjoyable monthly entertainments came off in the lecture room of St. Mark’s Church, on Second avenue, on Friday evening. Among the singers were Mrs. C. E. Horsley and Miss Kate Stark, both well known to the New York public; also, Miss Mary E. Hobbs, a young lady possessing a fine contralto voice, who has just returned from Europe, where she has spent some time in preparing herself for the concert room and the rendering of oratorio music. She seemed to be laboring under such severe indisposition that she was obliged to forgo the rendering of a cavatina from the ‘Huguenots.’ We shall hail this lady’s appearance in the concert room with pleasure. [Continues about poetic and dramatic readings.] Mr. Harwood’s burlesque imitation of the violin caused much amusement. These entertainments appear to be given by one of the gentlemen of the Union.”
