At end of review for concert given on 12/27/73.

“Mr. Thomas has now published his scheme for the next three months, and we can see that this season is likely to be even more remarkable than the last. He is to give a matinée at Steinway Hall next Saturday, presenting a rather more varied and popular programme than would befit a Symphony night, and playing, among other things, the ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ music, the ‘Träumerei,’ the ‘Rhapsodie Hongroise,’ and the Third ‘Leonore’ overture. The Symphony Concerts that are yet to come are all extraordinary. At the third we shall have two symphonies, Beethoven’s No. 8 and Gade’s No. 1, C minor, with a concert of Handel’s for two solo violins, solo violincello, and string orchestra, and a new work of Rubinstein’s, a Characterbild entitled ‘Ivan the Terrible.’ At the Fourth, the principal works are to be Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, in C, a Concerto for string orchestra by Bach, and a new Serenade by Volkmann; and at the Fifth, besides Beethoven’s Symphony in C minor, we are to have the whole of Liszt’s ‘Faust Symphony’ (three parts), with chorus of men’s voices. The programme for the sixth Concert is not yet announced.”
