Music in Gotham assumes the version performed of “Home, sweet home” was the popular one by Bishop (no composer is listed in the review).
“Seldom have the merry chimes of old Trinity rung out upon a happier assemblage than that which thronged Broadway from Astor House to Rector street as the old year passed away. As the hour approached which to usher in the new year several thousand persons congregated along the street freely discussing the events of the old, and anticipating those of the new, year. There seemed to be a happy blending of all classes from the ubiquitous urchins, who were present in great force, to the occupants of the carriages drawn up along the sidewalks, and on all sides was heard the joyous greeting of ‘A Happy New Year.’ The night was bright and clear, and the air was pleasant and genial. The following changes were played in good style by Mr. James E. Ayliff: [lists chimes]. The crowd, which was exceedingly good humored, did not disperse until past 1 o’clock.”
“Last night the chimes made hilarious music in the belfries of Old Trinity and Grace churches to indicate the departure of the old and the arrival of the new year. A number of people were assembled at Trinity church [sic] to listen to the tintinnabulation of the bells from the steeple, and at twenty minutes before twelve o’clock last night the concert began in Trinity, the bell ringer, Mr. Ayliffe, performing the following airs [lists works chimed].
The ringing concluded at midnight, when a new concert began, to herald the birth of the new year, and lasted 20 minutes.” Does not provide works list for post-midnight chimes.
