“Yesterday afternoon, at Holy Trinity Church, on Madison avenue, Mr. James Pearce, Mus. Bac. Oxon., the organist of Christ Church, presided at the organ and performed Mendelssohn’s grand prelude and fugue in C minor (opus 87); Beethoven’s adagio in C sharp minor, from the sonata (opus 27) which we have had occasion to characterize with reference to the composer and the Countess Guiletta Guicciardo, to whom it is dedicated; Schumann’s ‘Traeumerei’ and the ‘Geburtstagmarsch,’ that was originally written as a piano-forte duet, and other important and interesting works, in a style worthy of the reputation of this distinguished church composer. Mrs. W. N. Oliver sang Handel’s ‘I know that my Redeemer liveth,’ and a song by Torrente, both of which were greatly admired.”
