“The society gave a concert of miscellaneous selections at Association Hall last night under the direction of its leader, Mr. Carter. The attendance was so small that the experiment of the invasion of the metropolis by a suburban band of singers will scarcely be repeated. The Harlem vocalists, however, certainly deserved greater encouragement. They number some good voices, have been carefully trained and sing with intelligence. The selections on the programme were not very ambitious, but were all such as a musician-like taste would approve. We were particularly pleased with some of Mendelssohn’s songs for mixed voices, sung neatly and with good intonation; and a double quartet of men received an instantaneous recognition in the shape of a hearty encore.”
