Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 30 May 1874, 6.

“Last night the programme contained one of the finest of all overtures—that to the ‘Magic Flute’—besides the overtures to Tannhäuser and to Gounod’s ‘Mireille,’ this last being one of the recent additions to the repertory of the band. Another novelty was a Gavotte by Neustedt, entitled ‘Souvenir de Marie Thérèse,’ a light and pretty thing, which has acquired this season a marked popularity. Of the other pieces on the bill the most serious were the selections from the ‘Damnation de Faust’ of Berlioz, namely, the ‘Evocation, Menuet des Follets, et Ballet des Sylphes’—the latter certainly one of the most beautiful and delicate of this extraordinary composer’s inspirations—and the Hungarian March, better known perhaps through Liszt’s treatment of the same national theme.”
