“Last evening was a ‘Lohengrin’ night at the Central Park Garden. The whole of the second part was devoted to selections from that opera. The programme also included one of Schubert’s best overtures; the delicate and tasteful entr’acte ‘The Merchant of Venice,’ by Muehldorfer, called ‘In Portia’s Park;’ the nuns’ dance from ‘Robert le Diable,’ and the overture to ‘The Maid and the Magpie.’ But the interest of the evening centred in the ‘Lohengrin’ selections. They began with the beautiful prelude in which the Swan motive predominates, and comprised the best parts of the first act, the solemn bridal march from the second act, concluding with well-known introduction, chorus and march from the third act, which Mr. Thomas has given us so often this season. The weird story of Elsa and the Knight of the Holy Grail, which all had learned by heart last winter, was recalled. The scene on the bank of the Scheldt, the coming of the knight to battle for the maiden, the combat—all came back under the spell of the leader’s baton. The applause was judicious and liberal.”
