“The New-York Allgemeiner Sängerbund, or United Singing Societies, celebrated the 25th anniversary of their union by a vocal and instrumental concert at the Academy of Music on Saturday evening. The hall was draped with German and other flags, which hung from the proscenium boxes. The attendance was not very large, but great interest was manifested in the proceedings of the evening, which began soon after 8 o’clock with the overture to Wagner’s Rienzi given by the orchestra. A prologue, composed for the occasion, was then read by Madame A. Schwenke. It was an appeal to the singing societies for renewed efforts and higher achievements. ‘O, Spirit of Song,’ a festival hymn by Franz Abt, was then given by the full company, numbering over 150. Miss Ida Rosburgh followed in a Theme and variations for soprano from Proch, which were heartily applauded. After this came the singing of prize songs by each of the eight Societies, the Gesangverein Colonia, Marschner Männerchor, Rheinischer Sängerbund, Aurora (mixed) Choir, Gesangverein Armenia, Gesangverein Uhlandbund, and Theodore Koerner Liedertafel of this city, and the Liederkranz of Providence, R. I. The concluding selection was a cantata for soprano and tenor, with choral accompaniment by the singing societies and the pupils of the singing schools of the Sängerbund.”
