Review: New York Herald, 13 September 1874, 6.

“Thousands of sight-seers were around the pagoda, in which sat the band, and which seems to have been built in defiance to all laws of acoustics. It was the last concert of the season, and many and loud were the complaints against those responsible for depriving the public of the music they pay for right in the middle of the season. The programme was unusually interesting, comprising such works as [see above]. A saxophone solo and variations for the flute were also introduced. Lack of funds probably caused the absence of programmes. As the concert proceeded the carriages became more numerous on the drive and Dame Fashion sent some of her most brilliant representatives to do honor to the occasion.”
