“The admirable concerts given every Sunday at this immense hall by Downing’s Ninth Regiment Band have attracted much attention, and have already gained the favor of the public to an extent rarely achieved during the first season of any musical institution. The seventeenth concert of the series took place on Sunday afternoon, and was replete with interest. The principal feature was ‘Iceland’s Millenial Hymn,’ by Sveibjörnsson, which was published a short time since in the Herald with Dr. Hayes’ graphic correspondence. It is magnificently arranged for full military band by Major D. L. Downing, and the effect was so inspiring that it was unanimously redemanded. There is a vigorous strength in the theme and richness in the harmony that, united to the bright coloring thrown around it by the arranger, will make it a permanent favorite. Mr. Downing has written a very pretty introduction which fits the theme of the hymn exactly. The finale is very striking, being full and sonorous and grandly effective. The rest of the programme was as follows [see above]. Solos were contributed by [see above] and Mr. Benjamin C. Bent, cornet. The last mentioned gentleman is a thorough artist, and though very young will take rank with any one in his line in this country. The rendering of the principal selections by the band evidenced the presence of excellent material and a painstaking conductor.”
