“Mr. Jerome Hopkins, who has labored long and faithfully in the cause of music in this city, gave last night, before a very large house, his tenth springtide festival for the Orpheon fund. “The programme of the entertainment which comprised many interesting features, including original compositions by Ed. Mollenhauer, D. Buck, Pease and others, was rendered to a large audience, and received an interpretation from the soloists, Mrs. Maude Giles, an English soprano; Mr. Gonzales, baritone; Signora Palomino, the Cuban pianist; Mr. Carri, violinist; and the full Orpheon chorus, choir boys, and a grand orchestra from the Philharmonic. Mr. Hopkins’ endeavor to give us a training school for vocalists of the first order—in the development of which he displays the utmost earnestness—are fully deserving of support and appreciation.”
