“The programme last Thursday at the Central Park Garden included the delicious Pastorale from Bach’s ‘Christmas Oratorio,’ Cherubini’s overture to ‘Lodoiska,’ and Beethoven’s to ‘Coriolanus,’ the Andante from Schubert’s Octet, and several other choice things. The symphony was Mozart’s No. 10 in C, which we do not think was ever played in New-York before. It has only three movements, Allegro vivace, Andante di molto, and Allegro vivace, but the Andante is long enough to raise it to the orthodox proportions. Although it does not rank with Mozart’s most famous works, it is by no means deficient either in strength or melody. The second movement is characteristically tender and emotional, and the third has magnificent spirit, energy, and breadth.”
