“We are sorry to say that there will be no Spring season of Italian opera at the Academy this year. For some weeks the probabilities of a series of representations by Mr. Strakosch’s artists have been growing more and more slender, and, finally, the project has been relinquished. We hear that the operatic company will be transformed into a concert troupe, and it is even whispered that Mlle. Albani is to return to Europe at once. The financial condition of the country and the ever-increasing expenses of impresarii have brought about this unfortunate state of affairs, in consequence of which Italian opera in the United States is once more on the insecure footing from which, at one time, there seemed a likelihood of its removal.”
