Announcement: New York Clipper, 11 July 1863, 99.

“The affair is fixed for Thursday, 9th inst., at which time, every person connected with the building, both before and behind the curtain, have volunteered their services for the occasion, as an appreciation of a lady who, in despite of many obstacles which were placed in her way, has thus far carried on one of the leading theatres of the country, and in the most prompt manner has met and liquidated in full all her obligations.  This, at the close of the season (and at a theatre which by previous very bad management had begun to lose favor with the public,) speaks volumes in favor of the business tact and perseverance of Mrs. Jane English.  ‘The Wives of Paris’ will continue to be played until Thursday next, when there will be an entire change in the programme as Mrs. English is determined to offer a bill of such excellence on the occasion of her testimonial, as will ensure for her a full attendance of all those who appreciate woman’s industry.”

“On the 9th, a grand complimentary testimonial was tendered Jane English, the fair manageress of Laura Keene’s Theatre. . . . The bill selected for this occasion was a kind of an olla podrida one, consisting of a laughable comedy of ‘How to Avoid the Draft,’ . . . followed by the second act of ‘Wives of Paris’ in which were a variety of performances. . . . The very popular danseuse, Kate Pennoyer, assisted by Mons. Augoste, appeared in a pas de deux and gave general satisfaction to all present. The Star sisters, Auguste and Marie, two of the most graceful dancers on the stage, appeared in a Polish dance, which was exceedingly well done, and elicited great applause.  Prof. A. Muller’s violin solo was on the features of the evening’s performance. He is a first class artist, and can draw the bow equal to any musician we have engaged at any of our theaters.  This was followed by more dancing by M’lles Jennie and Ella, and Miss Calla.  Taken altogether, the benefit was a great success for the house was very crowded, and everything went off exceedingly well.”
