“Last evening, at the Union League Theatre, the glee-singers of New York gave their second entertainment. There was a remarkably good attendance, and the audience listened to the performances with evident pleasure. Cooke’s celebrated glee, ‘Shades of the Heroes,’ was very effectively rendered, and afforded great satisfaction. The words of Ossian have an indefinable beauty. They appear to be particularly well-suited to musical treatment. The part-song by Brandeis entitled ‘The Ring’ is also very interesting. Miss Beebe sang Mozart’s ‘Violet’ in an artistic manner; Miss Finch gave Miss Zimmermann’s setting of Kingsley’s ‘O! that We Two were Maying’ equally well, and Mr. Aiken sang Calcott’s ‘Last Man’ with characteristic expression. These were the only solos, and they were all encored.”
