“At 8 to Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse, for the first trial of Haydn’s 16th Mass. The large attendance, some 70, was unexpected by everyone, & encouraging. The Mass was sung straight through, with few if any breakings down. It is most brilliant & splendid, less pure & elegant than Mozart, but I think, heartier, more empathetic & genial. We shall have to look sharp for strong principals, for little solo passages are interwoven with nearly every chorus.”
