“Then to Mrs. Paran Stevens’ soirée musicale, with Ellie in crowd—enormous temperature. Rooms most gorgeously draped & furnished, so that in them music sounds as if sung through a wall of cottonbales. Ellie took part in Mendelssohn’s “Lift Thine Eyes” with Miss Fanny Reed & Mme. Anderson very well indeed. I expressed platitudes to sundry people, including beautiful Miss Fanny & Miss Mamy Smythe, Mme. von Hoffman, Mrs. Talboys, Mrs. Murray, etc. Miss Fanny S. is a Hebe, with her fine coloring & her look of vigorous health.”
