“First rehearsal tonight of Beethoven’s Mass in C at Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse. With Ellie, Miss Allieu, & Miss Emily. Very fair attendance, considering foul weather & bad walking. Mass read through with many repeats. Performance sagged, of course, & Pech addressed a vigorous allocution to his legions on the necessity of fidelity at rehearsals. Opening & finale are exquisite. Gloria, Credo, Et incarnatus, Et resurrexit, Sanctus, are of very high grade. But I do not believe we can justly appreciate this work, of all others, till we hear it with an orchestra. It seems to me to require a far more highly trained faculty of appreciation than Mozart’s 12th or Haydn’s 16th, & was surprised that many, to whom it was new, spoke of it so enthusiastically.”
