“With Ellie to Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse rehearsal. Very large attendance & two hours of hard work, devoted to the four movements of Beethoven’s Gloria—the first two of his Credo & a pretty chorus from Oberon. The Beethoven Mass finds great favor—much greater than I expected. It is preferred to Mozart’s No. 12 & Haydn’s 16th. Glad of it—but the only points in it that hit me hard as yet—are the opening of the Kyrie & of the Gloria—the Et incarnatus—the Sanctus—the Dona pacem. It seems to me, as a whole without the freshness & inspiration of an average specimen of Haydn or Mozart’s ecclesiastical work.

Three of Johny’s college friends are enrolled in the chorus—Frank Work, Gus Pisson, & Val Blacque.”
