“The Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse rehearsal last night is reported to have been promising. Beethoven’s Mass finds great favor with those who are practicing it. They think it not only finer than Haydn, but clearer—which surprises me. No one can foresee what estimate anyone else will form of any musical work. I thought this Mass would be pronounced fine, but just a little obscure & heavy—especially when contrasted with Haydn’s genial melodic style.”
