“Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse tonight. C. M. A., Beethoven, Benedictus, Agnus, Dona, choruses from Oberon. Very satisfactory, though the attendance was not large. Only one thing in this Mass I have not yet learned to like, viz., the passage in the Dona where the word Miserere is taken up by one part after another, & spoken rather than sung. Edmund tries to make the ‘Crucifixus’ in Mozart, No. 12 an analogy & a precedent—but it is not. I regret to say that this Miserere reminds me of nothing but the Katy-did—Katy-didn’t of a September bog.”
