“Philharmonic directors met at Steinway Hall, half past two, and the society (i.e., members of the orchestra) some 60 Teutons, at 3 p.m. M. Boehm, who is I believe, vice president, presented me as ‘President,’ & my new subjects applauded most good naturedly. I emitted about three sentences of inaugural—in substance—‘Much obliged for this cordial reception. Also for the honor of my election. Which I particularly appreciate because the Philharmonic first revealed to me the highest order of music, & each of its concerts, for a series of years, each bringing its own revelation, was an event to me. Therefore debt of gratitude—and I wish to serve the society in every way & humble capacity, & secretary will please read the minutes.’ No action of much importance. The full great doubtful question of reserved seats was referred back to the board of direction with power.”
