“Philharmonic directors met here from 10 to 12. Programmes for next season reported by the committee. Better than I expected. Beethoven & Mozart are fairly represented, otherwise a possible (alternative) symphony of Haydn’s. Extra concert is discussed. ‘Beethoven Centennial,’ 17th Dec. (?). The seventh symphony & music to Egmont. M. Booth to read the tragedy, or selections from it. The elocutionary clap-trap could be spared. The benighted committee included in its programme an ‘Oration on the genius of Beethoven by the President;’ I begged to be excused. The question of reserved seats farther discussed. General feeling in its favor, but Boehm dubitates & we postponed final decision.”
