“Ellie not quite well this morning, but it was a lovely day, & we fared down to Trinity. Vinton preached Vintoniously. Messiter has certainly got his choir well in hand. They did their work brilliantly—pity it had not been better worth the care & diligence our Kapell-Meister had bestowed on it. The Anglican anthem (forget its composer’s name) was a favorable specimen of its dreary school. The writer seemed to have a thought or idea underlying its highly respectable & accurate chords, a thought of no great worth, feebly expressed, but still tangible.”
