“In the sparkling opera of ‘La Jolie Parfumeuse,’ one of the most attractive works of the extensive répertoire of opéra bouffe, Mlle. Aimée last evening introduced one of Therese’s songs, ‘Les Canards,’ and a song and dance of the veritable minstrel pattern, ‘Pretty as a Picture.’ The house was crowded to overflowing and the fair artist received very many encores for her ‘English act.’ Her pronunciation of our vernacular was very correct, although it lacked the unction of the plantation, and Birch or Backus would have envied the peculiar swagger and tantalizing break down that followed each verse. Mlle. Aimée should now turn her attention seriously to some light sketches of the song and dance order in English, and from that she may yet attain a leading position in English opera and organize a troupe of her own. In opéra bouffe, in her own language, she is inimitable.”
