“Tonight with Ellie, Miss Nelly Smythe, & Diccon [Richard Henry Derby, Strong’s nephew] to Mendelssohn Glee Club concert, Irving Hall. Miss Nelly is a most superb young lady, with kind simple manners. The club is a chorus of 30 or 40 bassi & tenori, with Mösenthal as leader. Jem [James Francis Ruggles, Ellie’s brother] is much interested in it. They do songs—‘choral scenas,’ etc., by Abt, Märschner, Schumann, Wagner, & others, & do these most effectively, with evidence of careful study, good taste, & good drilling. A Miss Beebe—amateur, sang nicely, & Mills degraded himself & his art—a fine instrument, by the most brilliant admirable meaningless prestidigitation on the piano. Enthusiastically encored—of course. Audience large & ‘select,’ the club being sustained by subscription.”
