“The Mass was sung from Qui tollis to end, and it was a thorough & good rehearsal. It is naturally very much liked. Most of the chorus seem to prefer it to anything we have done. One can’t call it operatic or undignified. Many phrases occur in Haydn & Mozart that are far more secular (one might say more trivial) than anything in the Niedermeyer—but this last certainly seems somehow sensuous as compared with. I except & don’t care for the very dry archaic ‘Quoniam,’ but the rest of the Mass suggests a semi-tropical landscape by moonlight.”
