“Edmund Schermerhorn here this evening, taking counsel with Mrs. G. T. S. (after she had come uptown from Dr. Dix’s lecture at St. Paul’s) about certain matinees of chamber music he proposes getting up at his new house, under Pech’s direction. Very praiseworthy project, but he will assuredly get into pecuniary entanglements with Pech, and this may blow up our cozy little Executive Committee of the C. M. A.”

“From 3 ½ to 6 with Ellie at Edmund Schermerhorn’s [6 Great Jones St.]. The 3rd of his fortnightly musical afternoons, under Pech’s direction. He writes an ‘analysis’ of the music rendered at each, & absurdly entitles each performance a ‘[Reminder?] Arts.’ These performances are very nice. Handsome rooms—simple & slight refreshments—only 30 or 40 invited guests, nearly every one of them really appreciative of the afternoon’s work—and the best chamber music—these make a truly civilized combination. This afternoon we enjoyed Beethoven’s gorgeous septuor & Hummel’s septette with piano (op. 74) with the lovely trio. These (except the last two movements of Hummel) we hope to hear on these premises next Tuesday evening, under Bergner’s supervision. Rev. Cooke & Mme. Clara Perl sang Meyerbeer & Verdi.”
