“The last of Edmund’s musical matinees was pleasant. He had most kindly asked the three boys, who enjoyed it. Think of even Johny’s going & enjoying it. Programme was Beethoven’s quintette in C major (op. 29). Its scherzo the most striking of the movements, though all four are of high grade—the finale (suggestion of storm) most beautiful & original. Spohr, Barcarole & Scherzo (op. 135) piano (Von Inten) & violin (Karl Hamm) elegant & elaborate—not much more that I could discover. Mozart, Quintette in E-flat, piano, oboe, clarionet, bassoon & horn. Three movements, all full of Mozart’s matchless inexhaustible earnest melody. Miss Fanny Reed sang Halevy’s ‘Il va venir,’ which seems to me small trash, & also ‘Che faro senza Euridice.’ The young lady has much power & culture, but I think (sit venia loquendi) that she sometimes exaggerates her expression and over sentimentalizes her sentiment—possibly—just a little bit. Dickon [Richard Henry Derby] was there—Mrs. Gould Hoyt—Mrs. Will Astor (very nice), Mrs. Thorndyke—Mrs. Burton Harrison—Mrs. Pech—Miss Chattie Schermerhorn, etc.”
