“This being Whitsunday there was another full orchestral service at Trinity. It was pronounced the best yet given. Ellie was enthusiastic over it, & was much impressed. Trinity Church, the liturgy, fine music, & an orchestra, all together, happen to appeal to me strongly. Service was the same as on Ascension Day, except we had both the 2nd & 4th movements of the C minor symphony (as opening & closing voluntaries) & that the offertory was a handsome motett by Hummel. The Sanctus of Gounod’s Mass grows on me. It is sensuous & warm in color but certainly most effective.”
