“Messiter told me that he should have to leave out the horn & trombone parts in the Haydn Mass next Sunday (Trinity Sunday) because the appropriation is nearly dried up. Told him I would gladly foot that little bill, & hope I may not be too late.”

“[Trinity Church:] Music mostly from Haydn’s 1st Mass. Introit by one Garnett, uninteresting. Offertory an elegant motett by Hummel. Orchestral introduction, or voluntary, from a symphony of Haydn’s (in D, I think)—not very appropriate. It was all satisfactory & delightful, but I think choir & orchestra did not keep together quite so well as on Whitsunday.”
