“Schaad came to tell me, with a broken voice & tears in his eyes, that Kingsland makes certain absurd objections to letting the Philharmonic Society have the Academy of Music next year. I have seen the Steinway Hall people, & I guess Kingsland will become reasonable when he learns that Steinway Hall would suit us [as] well [as] the Academy, and in some respects better.”
“Philharmonic Tabak-concilium here this afternoon: Gissner, Siedler (?), Beisheim, Schaad, Rietzel, Bergmann. We take the Academy for next season. Kingsland puts on a slight increase of rent for the sole reason that the dividend to members of the orchestra was large last year. He’s an Ebrew Jew. Divers matters discussed at length, especially a collision of our evenings with those of the Brooklyn Philharmonic—to which many of our orchestra belong.”
