“At Academy of Music 2:30 to meet Herr Carl Bergmann & other Philharmonic directors for a ‘private view’ of certain new vocal artistes. Schaad had provided a piano. A Mr. Louis Bless, a Gallic tenor, executed a striking melody from Mehul’s Joseph. A Miss Lisner (?) from Berlin, I think did certain toast-water music from Favorita & Traviata, and an American tenor (name forgotten) gave us the dreariest of long-winded arias from Mendelssohn’s Elijah. Only the Frenchman seemed anywhere near up to our mark. The poor little soprano was frightened, and, moreover, she is given over to tremolo vocalization, & hardly favored us with a single pure & steady note.”
