“Last evening’s C. M. A. rehearsal was delightful. Mass to end of Credo, & then the intense choruses from Preciosa. They are unrivalled. I know nothing, in their kind, so fresh, joyous, & Bohemian. The Sunrise chorus (‘Die Sonne erwacht!’) with its great streaming quivering flooding chords of living light, simply knocks me down. And on getting up, I am again knocked over by the lovely chorus (in the melody of which I rejoiced 40 years ago), [quotes five lines of the German text].

That’s not bad for a bit of opera rhyme, & the music to which the words are set is worthy of stars & orbs of constellations. God be thanked for such music! To have heard it, often enough to grasp & own it, makes the rest of one’s life happier & better. It ennobles one. It’s equivalent to a certain step forward in a liberal education. I’m thankful that the boys so appreciate fine music. Louis & Temple [Strong’s younger sons] exulted at the news that Preciosa was to be produced again. They drank delight from the Pastoral Symphony [at a Philharmonic public rehearsal] this afternoon.”
