“Tonight at Rev. Cooke’s, 149 this street. His little drawing rooms were packed with nice people invited to hear his Missa Solemnis in C (Cooke, no. 1), on which he has worked for several months. There was a chorus of about 20. Instrumental septette & piano (Boehm, clarinet)—principals: Mrs. Burton Harrison soprano (I fear she sings a little false); Rev. Cooke tenor, Miss Smith alto, Mr. Baldwin basso. The Mass is creditable. No great freshness or melodic power of course, but general good taste, & (I should think) considerable faculty of construction. The Agnus Dei seemed to me a very handsome & effective movement. Discoursed Rev. Howland, Mrs. Camilla Hoyt, Mr. & Mrs. Eastman Johnson, Morgan Dix, etc.”
