“Yesterday afternoon a long session of Philharmonic directors at Steinway, & some effusion of pepper sauce. Vocalists give us no end of bother, and we seriously incline henceforth to do without them, if we can. Remmertz, the respectable baritone, was engaged for our next (4th) concert by Herr Rietzel as a committee of one, with power, at $100.00. The other directors rightly thought this sum exorbitant, & wanted to rescind the bargain, but I advised them that they could not do it.”
