“3 p.m. to the first of Edmund Schermerhorn’s series of musical ‘matinees’ in the afternoon. About 50 present—among whom were Miss Nilsson, old Robert Ray, Count Costi, Osten-Sacken, & the usual set. Edmund has advanced from the quatuors & septettes of last year to an orchestra of 25!–mostly Philharmonics. Pech, leader of course. We had Sterndale Bennett’s overture ‘Die Naiaden,’ which is pretty—Haydn’s B-flat symphony, no. 12 [which is in the key of E major], a dear old friend, & one of the loveliest & healthiest orchestral works extant—sweet, sound, & simple, as an Oread. Then Mrs. Imogen Brown sang certain truck from Traviata, & we closed with a ‘potpourri,’ by some Frenchman, from the Freyschütz, which was pungent & delicious. A most brilliant afternoon.”
